Have you ever wondered how birds fly? Why the sky is blue? What it’s like to parachute out of an airplane? “Twinkle, twinkle little star,” Clatter Valley Day Camp is going to prove just what you are, because this year… the sky’s the limit!

Join us to explore our skies; from airplanes to hurricanes, from constellations to rainbows, from pterosaurs to modern day birds. Campers will create crafts and participate in a variety of programs, rekindle friendships from past summers, and make new friends to carry into the future.

The week closes with a campfire and an overnight on Friday.

For girls entering grades 8 through 12 things are a little bit different. While the younger girls are exploring the sky you will be learning about leadership and personal development.

Are you ready to be a positive role model for younger campers? Come develop your leadership skills in the out-off-doors. Brush up on your campcraft skills and bring your enthusiasm to the younger campers.

This program will include Program Aide Core Training and LEAD training. As your skills improve you will help in the unit program areas. As a group you will decide upon and work towards a related interest project.

To be accepted into the program you must submit a letter of application and interest to the Camp Director.

The girls of Willow Brook are all excited about Friday night’s overnight!

Here is the procedure for morning:

When parents drop off campers, bring all overnight gear to the unit and put it into the unit leader’s cars.

If it is raining at arrival time, Unit Leaders will be parked up by the barn so that the gear can be placed into the cars without having to walk it out to the unit.

* * * Reminder * * *

Camping overnight can be a fun and exciting experience for any young girl. Pre-planning with your camper can assure her of your support in this small step toward independence. Discuss and plan what should be packed. The following list covers all necessary equipment.

Label everything that you want to see again!

Sleping bag

SMALL pillow

SMALL sleeping buddy (we have stuffed animals in the camp store)

Socks and undies

Hairbrush

Sweatshirt/Jacket

Long pants (it can get cold at night)

Saturday’s clothes

PJ’s

Small flashlight (we have some in the camp store)

Toothbrush and toothpaste

Rain gear (if rain is predicted)

Small? Yes. Sleeping buddy? NO!

The rain ended our fourth day at Clatter Valley a little early, but the campers still put in a full day of fun stuff. More cooking with Cheesey, songs with Red, games with Pixie, and program with Daisy and Skeeter. Brook time, archery time–time for everything!

The boys of Peter Pan (and their PA’s) raise the Thursday flag

Windy, Starbucks, Chickory, Dory and Snoop made bluebird houses with Shady Hollow today. Their PA staff, Riff Raff, Cheshire Cat, Mad Hatter and Shade, helped the girls so that everyone got to bring home beautiful houses for some feathered friends.

That stack of wood is a future bird house!

Willow Brook, Cricket Ridge, Bunny Burrow, Brookside Flats and Peter Pan made Eye Spy jars. Each camper filled a jar with sand, along with fifteen small items. The object of the game is to find all the items on the list without opening the jar. Our campers made use of their game jars while sitting under the pavilion in the rain!

Red Rover, Red Rover, who will we send over?

The Craft Adult staff had the most fun making the trivets with Shady Hollow. Difficult as it was to get the grout to dry in such damp weather, it was worth the effort. Starbucks still has the one she made when she was ten years old!

The Police Crime Scene Van visited camp today. The campers were shown pictures of crime scenes, learned all about fingerprints and how detectives lift them from surfaces. They even learned how the detectives use footprints to solve crimes. Mikayla Avallone of Cricket Ridge was brave enough to take off her shoes and give the officers a sample of hers!

The detectives in front of their crime lab van

We had some camp cooks today at the pavilion with Cheesey. Cricket Ridge made nachos, macaroni and cheese, and hot dogs. A little while later, Shady Hollow made every girl scout’s favorite treat–s’mores.

Cooking by the pavilion

Shady Hollow had a big day today. Not only was it their traditional ‘late night at camp’, but unit leaders, Hunter and Cocoa took them and their PAs on a bike hike. They also learned bike maintenance and safety.

The Shady Hollow girls on their bikes

Willow Brook made boats that they will race in the brook. Out in Peter Pan, camper Turner caught two fish! Bunny Burrow took their turn at flag ceremony in the morning, while Brookside Flats did our closing ceremony this afternoon.

The girls of Bunny Burrow raise the flag.

PAs and staff got to stay late at camp as well, giving them a much deserved hour and a half of play time.

Though the day started out wet, the rain kept away even if the clouds did not. Another wonderful day at Clatter Valley Day Camp.

Officers Woods, Berogche, and Glasser visited Clatter Valley today, treating the campers to the amazing abilities of Canine Officer Onyx, an eight-year old German Shepherd. Using German commands, Officer Glasser showed us how Onyx can sniff out things like drugs and other substances.

Officers Glasser and Onyx

Camper Maggie threw the officer’s keys out into the field behind the pavilion for Onyx to find. No one was surprised that he did, but everyone was amazed by how fast he did it! We all got to see just how powerful and effective an officer Onyx is when he ran down Officer Berogche, posing as a bad guy, by leaping at him and biting onto his specially padded arm. It’s good to know we have Onyx and the Canine Unit in our town.

Arrows were flying out in Archery! Pocohontas, Jo, Grizzly, Oreo and S’more are teaching our campers bow safety and how to shoot. Everyone is learning that archery is a lot harder than it looks. Hitting the target takes practice and patience; but by the end of the week, everyone will have lots of beads on their archery necklaces.

Grizzly and Pocohontas are in charge of the archery range.

Peter Pan, Willow Brook and Shady Hollow all took brook walks today. It is always fun to see all the different kinds of wildlife living there in and around the water. Brookside Flats and Bunny Burrow had the most fun at Archery, while Cricket Ridge liked games best. Shady Hollow, our oldest campers, learned jack knife safety. With so much to do, everyone will have a new favorite tomorrow!

The boys of Peter Pan, under the guidance of Glinda, enjoy a Brook Walk

But we had a great time, the clouds gave way to a gorgeous day and we all can’t wait for Tuesday–red day!

CVDC’s new games unit was a huge hit with all the campers. Goose and Pixie have more great stuff planned for the week. If you did not get out to the singing tree yet, Red will be waiting to sing with you soon! So many crafts to do, so many games to play and songs to learn; will we have time for it all? Another mystery for mystery week!
