Mentos and Diet Coke

Today was a beautiful day at Clatter Valley Day Camp, the sun was hot but humidity low.

Shady Hollow was making exploding soda bottles by mixing 4 Mentos into a bottle of Diet Coke, the chemical reaction is pretty cool! Cricket Ridge had a cooking lesson over the fire with Cheesy. They had pita pizzas and all agreed they were quite yummy.

We are looking forward to Thursday which is also going to be quite hot, so be ready with lots of water and maybe a hat. The DJ will be coming in the afternoon so there should be plenty of dancing.

Cricket Ridge at Program

The first day of Clatter Valley Day Camp was green day. Daisy, our assistant PA Director, proved her camp spirit by wearing a green crown. Many of our campers and staff wore green as well, from green socks to green nail polish to green hair ribbons and shorts.

Though things started out a little soggy this morning, the sun was shining and the sky was blue before closing flag ceremony. Drizzles don’t stop Clatter Valley campers! They sang at the singing tree with Lark, waded in the brook and made kites in craft. Some even had campfire time with Cheesy, our camp cook.

With good weather predicted for the rest of the week, look forward to lots more fun stuff reported here on the CVDC blog.

Rainy Thursday at CVDC

The rain ended our fourth day at Clatter Valley a little early, but the campers still put in a full day of fun stuff. More cooking with Cheesey, songs with Red, games with Pixie, and program with Daisy and Skeeter. Brook time, archery time–time for everything!

Windy, Starbucks, Chickory, Dory and Snoop made bluebird houses with Shady Hollow today. Their PA staff, Riff Raff, Cheshire Cat, Mad Hatter and Shade, helped the girls so that everyone got to bring home beautiful houses for some feathered friends.

That stack of wood is a future bird house!

Willow Brook, Cricket Ridge, Bunny Burrow, Brookside Flats and Peter Pan made Eye Spy jars. Each camper filled a jar with sand, along with fifteen small items. The object of the game is to find all the items on the list without opening the jar. Our campers made use of their game jars while sitting under the pavilion in the rain!

The Craft Adult staff had the most fun making the trivets with Shady Hollow. Difficult as it was to get the grout to dry in such damp weather, it was worth the effort. Starbucks still has the one she made when she was ten years old!

The Police Crime Scene Van visited camp today. The campers were shown pictures of crime scenes, learned all about fingerprints and how detectives lift them from surfaces. They even learned how the detectives use footprints to solve crimes. Mikayla Avallone of Cricket Ridge was brave enough to take off her shoes and give the officers a sample of hers!

We had some camp cooks today at the pavilion with Cheesey. Cricket Ridge made nachos, macaroni and cheese, and hot dogs. A little while later, Shady Hollow made every girl scout’s favorite treat–s’mores.

Shady Hollow had a big day today. Not only was it their traditional ‘late night at camp’, but unit leaders, Hunter and Cocoa took them and their PAs on a bike hike. They also learned bike maintenance and safety.

Willow Brook made boats that they will race in the brook. Out in Peter Pan, camper Turner caught two fish! Bunny Burrow took their turn at flag ceremony in the morning, while Brookside Flats did our closing ceremony this afternoon.

PAs and staff got to stay late at camp as well, giving them a much deserved hour and a half of play time.

Though the day started out wet, the rain kept away even if the clouds did not. Another wonderful day at Clatter Valley Day Camp.

Officers Woods, Berogche, and Glasser visited Clatter Valley today, treating the campers to the amazing abilities of Canine Officer Onyx, an eight-year old German Shepherd. Using German commands, Officer Glasser showed us how Onyx can sniff out things like drugs and other substances.

Camper Maggie threw the officer’s keys out into the field behind the pavilion for Onyx to find. No one was surprised that he did, but everyone was amazed by how fast he did it! We all got to see just how powerful and effective an officer Onyx is when he ran down Officer Berogche, posing as a bad guy, by leaping at him and biting onto his specially padded arm. It’s good to know we have Onyx and the Canine Unit in our town.

Arrows were flying out in Archery! Pocohontas, Jo, Grizzly, Oreo and S’more are teaching our campers bow safety and how to shoot. Everyone is learning that archery is a lot harder than it looks. Hitting the target takes practice and patience; but by the end of the week, everyone will have lots of beads on their archery necklaces.

Grizzly and Pocohontas are in charge of the archery range.

Peter Pan, Willow Brook and Shady Hollow all took brook walks today. It is always fun to see all the different kinds of wildlife living there in and around the water. Brookside Flats and Bunny Burrow had the most fun at Archery, while Cricket Ridge liked games best. Shady Hollow, our oldest campers, learned jack knife safety. With so much to do, everyone will have a new favorite tomorrow!

Monday at Clatter Valley Day Camp

The first day at camp is always too fast. Making new friends, catching up with old ones; before everyone knows it, it’s flag time and the first day is over. But we had a great time, the clouds gave way to a gorgeous day and we all can’t wait for Tuesday–red day!

CVDC’s new games unit was a huge hit with all the campers. Goose and Pixie have more great stuff planned for the week. If you did not get out to the singing tree yet, Red will be waiting to sing with you soon! So many crafts to do, so many games to play and songs to learn; will we have time for it all? Another mystery for mystery week!
